This collection of paintings and drawings are part of the works done by Kumari during her stay in the Indian Himalayas from 2000-2006. These experimental works are an expression of the beauty and life she feels pulsing through her core. With grounding in the traditional techniques of European and Chinese landscape painting and an affinity for the indigenous American Abstract Expressionists, Kumari has created a uniquely international genre.
As a child, Kumari was trained in landscape painting, and was the youngest member of the landscape painter collective comprising professional painters and illustrators of Southeastern Michigan, USA. Following her BA from Kalamazoo College in Michigan, Kumari set off to Taiwan where she continued her studies in Chinese language and culture including Chinese calligraphy and landscape painting. She also coordinated art exhibitions in Taiwan and Mainland China. She was called to serve the earth in 1991 with a Peace Corps posting to northern Ghana in West Africa. In Ghana she established tree nurseries and created community education programs in tree planting, securing funding for 19 projects for six years. Upon return to the U.S., Kumari continued her studies of art including painting, drawing and printmaking at the University of California Santa Cruz and San Jose State University. It was there she encountered the California school of landscape painters and embraced the wild colors, freedom and spontaneity of the place. At the same time she began teaching landscape painting and exhibiting her work in California.
The colors of India called to her in 1999 and once her feet touched India her heart sent her straight to the Himalayas. She has walked many of the valleys of Himachal Pradesh and counts Banjar valley and Spiti valley among her favorites. One of her greatest pleasures is sharing her work through exhibitions. She currently splits her time between India and the U.S.A.
