PHOTOEXHIBITION BY THOMAS SHOR On 11th June a new exhibition was inaugurated at the Modern Art Exhibition hall, IRMT. This time, the guests of the IRMT could see beautiful photos of the writer and photographer Thomas Shor from Boston, Massachussets, USA. His first modest foray into higher elevations occurred when he went north to attend the university in the Green Mountains of the state of Vermont near the Canadian border, where he studied comparative religion, philosophy and mythology. An inveterate traveler and lover of mountains and their peoples, Thomas Shor has lived high in the planet’s mountainous realms in such places as Chiapas in southern Mexico, Greece, and the Indian Himalayas. It is there – above 7 000 feet, that he feels most at home, photographing people and collecting and writing their stories. Being both a photographer and a writer provides Thomas Shor a balance he wouldn’t otherwise have. “When I write,” he explains, “I tend to write and rewrite, polish and craft sentences and cadences. Sometimes I spend an entire afternoon working on a couple of paragraphs I originally wrote weeks ago that tells the story of something that occurred months or even years ago. Writing for me is a very deliberate act. Photography is entirely spontaneous. There is nothing I like more than to write until the sun moves towards setting, grab my camera (I use a Contax rangefinder with professional slide film), and go to the market in order to capture a moment. What interests me about photography is that the actual act of taking a photograph takes from one tenth to one thousandth of a second. In writing, you can go back and think of another adjective, you can change the expression on someone’s face. Photography is all about capturing a unique moment in time. When you press the shutter, you either capture the moment or not. Photography for me is the way of entering the flow of the present.”… Thomas Shor’s first published book ‘Windblown Clouds’ tells the story of his first trip to India, at the age of 21.
