Artist Vishwanath Nair at the inauguration of his exhibition in Moscow |
On 24th June 2008, a very special exhibition has been inaugurated in Moscow, at the International Centre of the Roerichs. The valley of gods has made its way to far-away Russia...
Vishwanath Nair, a teacher of traditional Kullu weaving art from Helena Roerich Art College run by the International Roerich Memorial Trust, was invited by the Vice President of the Centre of the Roerichs, Madam Ludmila V.Shaposhnikova to exhibit his art works in their Museum.
Verily it was a special honor to held the exhibition in this famous Centre. And for Vishwanath it was his first ever visit abroad! For the exhibition he went well prepared - he brought different shawls with traditional Kullu designs, made of wool and angora, women's traditional winter dress - patu, mufflers, Kullu caps, socks etc. Main attraction for the visitors, however, were Vishwanath's original creative works, of which he has credit to be the first master in the world who made such things - mufflers with reproduced Roerich's paintings! Verily, people who came for the exhibition, were stunned by the beauty of such works, by the choice of background colors, bright Roerich paintings very aesthetically matching with traditional Kullu border designs. During the inauguration Vishwanath was fully busy - people were approaching him with many different questions concerning the weaving art and cultural issues of the Kullu valley.
After the exhibition at the Roerich Centre, Vishwanath was invited to stay at the International Charitable Fund Dialogue of Cultures - United World', the Ethnovillage Company Ltd, near Moscow, who recently started their Ethno-Museum of Indian Traditional Arts. There, at the beautiful natural environment, which Vishwanath found to be resembling his own nature at home at Kullu, he was demonstrating the process of traditional Kullu weaving art to the visitors and tourists of the Centre on original traditional wooden handloom brought for this occasion to the Centre.
Vishwanath came back to India on 14th August, spending almost two months in Russia. He is happy about his new experience, and we hope it has been a powerful boost for his further creative work.
